Education and Training

Forest Holme Hospice, as part of University Hospitals Dorset, is one of the lead providers for palliative care education and training in the locality and offers a range of training courses throughout the year. The main aim of our education programme is to support the development of a multi-disciplinary team which is able to deliver high quality palliative care to all those who need it irrespective of diagnosis or place of care. We may also be able to provide bespoke training, depending on your needs.

Courses & Events

Courses hosted by the Macmillan Unit (MMU) will be held at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth. Courses hosted by Forest Holme (FH) will be held at St Mary’s Church Hall on Longfleet Road, Poole or at Forest Holme.

Principles of Palliative Care

Course Description

This two-day interactive workshop aims to provide core knowledge for Registered Nurses working in a community role or Nursing Home setting.  It aims to explore the issues and challenges relating to the practical application of person-centred palliative care towards the end of life.  It is aimed at all nurses (including recently qualified nurses), allied health professionals or those who feel they need an update.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • Describe the principles of person-centred end of life care
  • Know the difference between ‘specialist’ and general palliative care
  • Identify how to alleviate the common symptoms associated with the approach to end of life
  • Respond appropriately to palliative care emergencies
  • Facilitate conversations regarding advance care planning

End of Life Medications

This is a half-day course – delegates must have attended the Principles course. 

Course fee £30.

Course Description

This half-day interactive workshop is offered as a follow-up to the Principles of Palliative Care course.

Contents include:

  • Commencing syringe drivers
  • Use of medication
  • Pain
  • Nausea
  • Agitation
  • Respiratory secretions

Learning Outcome

By the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • Confidently know which medication to chose
  • Understand titration of medication
  • Undertake an opiate conversion
  • Decide suitable dose ranges/starting doses
  • Know when a PRN injection or syringe driver is indicated
  • Know which medications are suitable for multiple indications
  • Consider risks and benefits of medications at the end of life

Allow a Natural Death

24th April 2024 hosted by Macmillan Unit 

One day workshop. Maximum 20 delegates per course.

Course fee £70.

Course Description

This interactive workshop aims to raise awareness and develop the knowledge, skills and attitude of GPs & experienced registered nurses who are likely to be facilitating regular conversations regarding resuscitation.  This workshop aims to enable you to complete the relevant documentation competently.  Criteria for this course is five years experience in your role.

Content includes:

  • What is meant by Allow A Natural Death (AAND)
  • Aims and principles of AAND – including the legal aspects (Mental Capacity Act) and documentation
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Effective and sensitive communication skills

Learning Outcome

By the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • Facilitate conversations with patients and their families around the decision of completing an Allow a Natural Death form and be confident in completing the form.
  • Describe the legal and ethical aspects of decision making to inform discussions.
  • Be able to provide patients and families clear rationale for decisions made and be able to identify and overcome barriers within conversations.

Advance Care Planning

23th September 2024 hosted by Forest Holme.

One day workshop. Maximum 15 delegates per course.

HCA Study Day hosted by Macmillan Unit

14th October 2023 

One day course. Maximum 25 delegates per course.

Course fee £70.

Course Description

This day is aimed at HCAs working in the NHS or Nursing Homes.

Aim

Interactive “workshop style” study day that helps HCAs to understand what it means to offer palliative care from a holistic perspective and how to support patients and families in their understanding of the stages of progressive disease and ultimately to recognise when a patient is dying.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the study day you will be able to:

  • Understand what palliative care means
  • Gain a better understanding of cancer and how it is treated
  • Gain understanding of other life limiting conditions
  • To identify symptoms experienced at end of life and how they can be managed
  • To recognise dying
  • Identify stages of grief
  • Feel more confident in answering difficult questions
