‘What Matters’ Palliative Care Conference 2020

Throughout October, Forest Holme Hospice Charity hosted a series of online events focusing on “What Matters”. Thanks to all who joined us and especially our guest speakers Andy Brogan and Jackie Le Fèvre, as well as Dr Saskie Dorman and Dr Beverley Lee.

We’re sharing here a recording of each session and graphics brilliantly capturing the main themes by Virpi Oinonen.

We’d love to hear from you what you make of this – whether it makes sense to you or whether you see something different.

Bespoke By Default – with Andy Brogan

What does it take to bring truly personalised care to life? While the world of manufacturing has taught us that standardisation is key to quality and efficiency, is that true for the world of service? In particular, is it true for the world of public service?

In this session, we explore how, faced with the massive variety in human circumstances, strengths, needs, wants, aspirations, anxieties, enthusiasms and more, effective public services must be bespoke-by-default. Through case study examples and exercises we unpack what this means and how bringing truly personalised care to life requires new and different thinking about how to make work work.

Results Through Relationships – with Beverley Lee and Saskie Dorman

What really matters towards the end of life? If achieving what matters sometimes feels harder than it should, what can we all do to make it easier?

In this session we explore everyday barriers and opportunities to achieving what matters, and practical ways we can embed shared learning and sense-making together as part of our day-to-day work. Relationships matter. Let’s find ways to bring out the best in ourselves and each other.

Getting Things Done – with Andy Brogan

Does it ever feel like everything’s a priority? So much so that in effect nothing is? Or that your ’to do’ list never gets ’to done’? Or that having so much to manage makes it impossible to keep on top of what really matters? If so then here are two bits of good news:

1. You’re not alone.
2. It doesn’t have to be like this.

In this session we explore some simple approaches that individuals and teams can use to maintain focus on what really matters so that what really matters is what gets done.

Heartfelt Values – with Jackie Le Fèvre

People are gloriously varied and diverse. There are, however, some threads from the shared biology of humanity which are true of all of us. We all take some values to heart, we experience the world and make sense of what goes on through the lens of our values – your values, my values, lie at the centre of ‘why’ some things matter and other things don’t.

In this session Jackie explores some of the evolution of being human alongside the practicalities of consciously harnessing values for better outcomes.
