Education and Training
Forest Holme Hospice, as part of University Hospitals Dorset, is one of the lead providers for palliative care education and training in the locality and offers a range of training courses throughout the year. The main aim of our education programme is to support the development of a multi-disciplinary team which is able to deliver high quality palliative care to all those who need it irrespective of diagnosis or place of care. We may also be able to provide bespoke training, depending on your needs.

Courses & Events
Courses hosted by the Macmillan Unit (MMU) will be held at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth. Courses hosted by Forest Holme (FH) will be held in the Coldwell Room at Forest Holme.
All bookings must be made using our booking form and full payment must be received in advance of the course.

Advanced Principles of Palliative Care
Date: 18th and 19th June 2026
Time: 08.30 – 16.30
This interactive, 2 day course, aims to provide core knowledge for registered nurses working in the community.
*Nurses must be two years post registration.
Contents include:
- What is meant by specialist palliative care?
- Pain control and symptom management
- Palliative care emergencies
- Basics of oncology
- Breathlessness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Grief and loss
*Delegates to attend both days to complete course.
Cost: £100 per person.

For cancellations within 2 weeks of the course or failure to attend, payment will not be reimbursed. If 3 weeks before the course there are less than 75% of the places booked the course will be cancelled and fees will be refunded.
End of Life Medications Workshop
Date: 2nd July 2026
Time: tbc
This half-day workshop is offered as a follow-up to the Advanced Principles of Palliative Care course.
Contents include:
- Commencing syringe drivers
- Use of medication
- Pain
- Nausea
- Agitation
- Respiratory secretions
*Delegates must have attended the Principles course.
Cost: £30 per person

Advance Care Planning Workshop
Date: 18th September 2026
Time: 08.45 – 16.30
This interactive workshop aims to provide core knowledge for Registered Nurses working within a community role or Nursing Home setting. It aims to explore the issues and challenges relating to the practical application of person-centred palliative care towards the end of life.
Contents include:
- What is meant by advance care planning (ACP)
- Aims and principles of ACP – including documentation and legal aspects
- Roles and responsibilities
Learning Outcome
By the end of the workshop you will:
- Be able to describe what is meant by advance care planning
- Be able to examine your own role and responsibilities around advance care planning
- Have increased confidence to facilitate conversations around ACP with patients and families.
