Education and Training

Forest Holme Hospice, as part of University Hospitals Dorset, is one of the lead providers for palliative care education and training in the locality and offers a range of training courses throughout the year. The main aim of our education programme is to support the development of a multi-disciplinary team which is able to deliver high quality palliative care to all those who need it irrespective of diagnosis or place of care. We may also be able to provide bespoke training, depending on your needs.

Courses & Events

Courses hosted by the Macmillan Unit (MMU) will be held at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth. Courses hosted by Forest Holme (FH) will be held at St Mary’s Church Hall on Longfleet Road, Poole or at Forest Holme.

All bookings must be made using our booking form and full payment must be received in advance of the course.

HCA Study Day hosted by Macmillan Unit

A one day conference for health and social care professionals in both primary and secondary care.  This MDT-led day will provide knowledge and information to promote best evidence based clinical practice within MND care locally. We aim to stimulate new ideas and partnerships, leading to better support for people with MND and their families.

A one day conference for health care professionals in both primary and secondary care. “Supporting patients with non-malignant conditions at end of life”

Principles Of Palliative Care Workshop

This interactive workshop aims to provide core knowledge for Registered Nurses working in a community role or Nursing Home setting. Delegates must be registered nurses at least two years post-registration.

16th & 17th January 2025 hosted by Forest Holme – delegates must attend both days.

Contents include:
• What is meant by specialist palliative care?
• Pain control and symptom management
• Palliative care emergencies
• Basics of oncology
• Breathlessness
• Nausea and vomiting
• Grief and loss

For cancellations within 2 weeks of the course or failure to attend, payment will not be reimbursed.  If 3 weeks before the course there are less than 75% of the places booked the course will be cancelled and fees will be refunded.

End of Life Medications Workshop

This half-day interactive workshop is offered as a follow-up to the Principles of Palliative Care course. 

29th January 2025 hosted by Forest Holme – delegates must have attended the Principles course.

Contents include:
• Commencing syringe drivers
• Use of medication
• Pain
• Nausea
• Agitation
• Respiratory secretions
