A special day out in Worth Matravers

On Friday 4th July, a group of Forest Holme volunteers enjoyed a well-deserved day out in the beautiful village of Worth Matravers.

Together with Andy from Jurassic Jaunts, we organised a relaxing and rejuvenating walk along some of Dorset’s most stunning coastal paths. With sweeping views and plenty of fresh air, it was the perfect chance to unwind, connect, and share stories among our diverse volunteer team – from ward support and fundraising to gardening and bereavement café volunteers.

After the walk, the intrepid explorers visited the much-loved Square and Compass pub, where they were warmly welcomed by owner Charlie. He kindly gave them a personal tour of his fossil collection, sparking plenty of curiosity and conversation. From ancient ammonites to fascinating relics, they delved into secrets of the area’s prehistoric past. And of course, the delicious pasties and sausage rolls made for a much-appreciated lunch!

Some of the group also stopped off at the Etches Collection Museum on the way home to explore even more fossils – a spontaneous addition to the day, kindly facilitated with free entry arranged by Andy.

What made the day truly special was the spirit of community. Volunteers shared lifts, conversations flowed between people from different roles, and new connections were made. As one volunteer said, “I had the greatest of day

Heidi! Thank you so much”, while another added “Thanks for organising the trip to the Purbeck – I thoroughly enjoyed the day and the fossil collection at the pub was so interesting.”

There’s already talk of making it a regular even
